Naked with Strangers: A Foreigner's Memoir of Love and Japan
June 26, 2018
Angela Elson
Non-fiction: Memoir
At 21 years old, Angela Elson moved to Osaka, Japan, to teach English and make sense of herself in a country that championed both the ritual suicide and the Hello Kitty toaster. It didn't take long to learn that it's hard to belong in a culture where fitting in as a foreigner means accepting you can't—even more so when you're a plucky go-getter with no real grasp of your many personal flaws. But growing up is achieved somewhere between becoming who you think you should be and learning to stand who you truly are, and Elson does just that in this hilarious, poignant travelogue of love and failures in which she offers insight into a world of imperfect perfectionists—herself included.
