Category:
Non-fiction: Memoir
Description:
Through almost forty years of being a pastor I developed close relationships with several veterans who recounted to me their rich life experiences. In ‘Last of the Last, Best of the Best, and First of the First’ these peoples’ stories, American military history, historical American landmarks, enduring romances, and a former American era come alive. The largest section of the book is devoted to Amy Alger who pressed forward in life, undeterred by societal norms related to females, to accomplish many firsts for women in sports and in military service. She did so with confidence, determination, and the pursuit of excellence. There is inspiration in her story for others who face opposition from naysayers and cultural norms. She channeled her disappointment and anger in positive ways that kept her moving forward with her life’s goals, despite the challenges. The book is intentionally multi-dimensional and could therefore appeal to people on several levels. Inherent in these stories is something for the mind, something for the heart, and something for the spirit.
