Harry Kendall Dowdy, Jr., is a retired US Army Colonel, Military Intelligence, with 30 years of active duty. He is originally from South Carolina and has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree, a Master of Science degree, and a Bachelor of Science degree. He was the ROTC cadet colonel and Regimental Commander at South Carolina State College. In addition, he is a graduate of the US Army Intelligence School (three diplomas), the US Army Command and General Staff College, and the US Army Language School, with a specialization in Japanese. He was a senior intelligence officer at the national level, where he analyzed foreign military and political issues and wrote numerous classified research papers for the Department of Defense.
As a US Army counterintelligence special agent in civilian clothes, he conducted intelligence operations in the United States. Also, he directed intelligence operations in Germany, Italy, Korea, and Vietnam as well as coordinated such operations with foreign intelligence agencies. From a base in the former West Germany, he directed espionage operations into communist countries behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War.
In Vietnam, he was assigned to the US Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and was the intelligence advisor to a Vietnamese intelligence unit commander at corps level, gathering combat intelligence and exploiting prisoners of war.
His other assignments include Division Chief, Security Activity, Headquarters, Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) at the Pentagon; Chief, China Branch, DIA; and Operations Officer, Headquarters, US Army Intelligence Command. Also, he was Commanding Officer of the Washington Field Office, which was the largest field office of the Defense Investigative Service. Colonel Dowdy coordinated intelligence operations for the Central Intelligence (CIA), which awarded him its Certificate of Appreciation.
He received 19 military awards, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, and Army Meritorious Service Medal and two awards of the Army Commendation Medal. In addition, he was awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the Secretary of Defense for his service during the Cold War. Colonel Dowdy was inducted into the Reserve Officers Training Corps Hall of Fame at South Carolina State University.
After retirement from the Army, he gained employment as chief of security at the corporate headquarters of a Fortune 500 company in Baltimore, MD, from which he also retired.
Colonel Dowdy has authored several newspaper articles and is a published poet. In retirement, he continues to pursue his lifelong interest in history, philosophy, anthropology, biology and other disciplines that seriously examine the human condition.
