Description:
A 2019 Science magazine study revealed that 3 billion birds—30% of Earth’s avian population—have disappeared since 1969. At least that many, ranging from hummingbirds to eagles, were slaughtered wantonly across the globe during the “murderous millinery” age (roughly 1860-1925) simply to appease women’s vanity. They spent abnormal amounts of money to purchase monstrous hats and clothing adorned prodigiously with birds’ feathers, plumes, and parts in the name of fashion. “A World Without Birds” describes the heinous methods used to kill the birds, often just for a feather or a small part, explains why certain species were slaughtered to the point of extinction, addresses the social, cultural, and economic upheaval the killing generated worldwide, discusses actions taken by state and federal legislators to protect the birds and prosecute the people who used their parts as decorations, profiles the front-line individuals and organizations that stood in the way of the profit-driven milliners and hunters who perpetuated the slaughter and worked to restore bird populations through innovative preservation, conservation, and education programs that are still in place today…The book draws parallels between issues involved in the bird slaughter era and those in today’s critical social issues, e.g., the role of lobbyists and state vs. federal control in regulating an industry, the use of fake news to sway public opinion, gender warfare…In short, this insightful analysis of a tumultuous period in history proves that the similarities between today’s political issues and news cycles compared to those of a century ago are startling.
