The Giant Killer
Apr. 13, 2021
David Yuzuk
Non-fiction: History/Politics/Current Affairs
The most unconventional man to ever serve in the US military, Richard Flaherty needed a Congressional waver to enlist in the Army as he did not meet the height or weight requirements.

Bullied and ridiculed at boot camp, Flaherty nonetheless achieved the kind of stature that’s only dreamed of: He became a captain in the Green Berets with 2 Bronze and a Silver Star. His decommission in 1971 was unexpected and devastating, and Flaherty sank into the murky world of mercenary work. But he gained a reputation for intelligence, and the CIA recruited him to supply the Contras in Central America: planes, cocaine and HALO jumps into the Everglades. When he’s arrested for possession, he loses his girlfriend and his respect. That’s when Flaherty vows to take down both enemies — the Army and the CIA — with a single stone.

Author and police officer David Yuzuk befriended Richard Flaherty, who was living homeless on the streets of Aventura, Florida. When Flaherty began to tell his story, he warned Yuzuk that asking too many questions could be bad for Yuzuk’s career and dangerous to his own health. Sure enough, 8 hours after Yuzuk made a call to confirm Flaherty’s identity, Flaherty was killed in a hit-and-run.

THE GIANT KILLER book has been on sale for one year, and has never dropped off the Amazon military best seller list.

The treatment sticks closely to the true story of honor and disgrace, betrayal and retribution, and focuses on Flaherty’s role in the guns-for-arms operations that transformed Honduras into the murder capital of the Americas.
