BLOSSOMS is a literary phenomenon in China with over 800,000 copies sold and more than 30 literary prizes won. It is regarded as the best novel on modern urban life in China. With a split time frame, it weaves two significant eras in Chinese history, namely the Cultural Revolution and the shift to market economy in the early 1990s into a tapestry of love, desire, memory and nostalgia, a tale of ordinary and extraordinary events.

Iconic film director Wong Kar-wai secured the film rights for a TV series as well as the long-awaited third part in his Shanghai Trilogy ('2046', 'In the Mood for Love') to be released in 2022.

A love song to Shanghai. Spanning over forty years, from the Cultural Revolution to the shift of market economy.

Set in Shanghai and spanning four decades in the second half of the 20th century, BLOSSOMS is the coming-of-age story of Abao, Husheng and Xiaomao – three young men from different social backgrounds and neighborhoods of the city. Through alternating chapters focusing on their youth (1960s) and adulthood (1990s), readers are given vivid accounts of how the characters’ lives, personalities and socioeconomic situations changed along with the city in a turbulent political era, followed by a subsequent period of massive economic growth.
