Mandu or Mandav literally meaning the City of Joy is a small town in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India, now best known for a fort built by Baz Bahadur in the memory of his queen Rani Roopmati. Dotted with monuments, tombs and lush green gardens, Mandu is a fine example of rich heritage. The striking monuments of Mandu consequently combine the assertion of Afghan mode with the great cultural heritage of the Turkish people. Like most eclectic creations that borrow the best from two cultures, Mandu is uniquely impressive.

‘Mandu: The Romance of Roopmati and Baz Bahadur’ by Malathi Ramachandran is a novel is inspired by the true story of the young sultan, Baz Bahadur, and the beautiful peasant girl, Roopmati, who come together over their common love for classical music. He is a man who can have any woman, and she a woman too proud to ever be part of his harem. The fortress city lit up with lanterns and throbbing to the beat of ghungroos and tablas, a magic begins to happen as they sing together, night after night, in the enchanting world of Mandu. But, far away, in Agra, the Mughal Emperor, Akbar, is planning his campaigns and Mandu has been pinned on his map as a kingdom to be captured.

Malathi Ramachandran is a Masters in Mass Communication, who has had many short stories published in magazines and anthologies, two of which have won prizes in British Council short fiction contests. An avid reader, amateur artist and an ardent itinerant, she has travelled widely and loves observing people of different cultures. Her plots and characters are often inspired by her rich and varied experiences. Malathi conducts creative writing workshops for adults and children under the brand name Melting Pot.
