Author:
Barbara Casey
Category:
Children's: Young Adult Fiction
Description:
When Jennifer Torres, one of the FIGs (Females of Intellectual Genius from Wood Rose Orphanage), discovers that her parents did not die in a terrible car wreck, but are alive and in hiding, she frantically turns to Carolina, her teacher and mentor from Wood Rose Orphanage, and the other two FIGs—Dara with her gift for languages and Mackenzie with her gift for problem-solving—to help her search for the truth. This search leads them to her great grandfather’s painting—“The Nightjar’s Promise”—that was stolen along with other Jewish works of art by the Nazis during World War II. It is “The Nightjar’s Promise” that reveals why Jennifer’s parents deceived her by pretending to be dead and had her placed in the orphanage. As Carolina hears the urgent warnings from her Gypsy mother, she and the three FIGs unearth Jennifer’s connection to the Nazi Fourth Reich and discover a secret organization that has been given the task of protecting Jennifer and locating the remaining stolen Jewish paintings. With this forbidden knowledge, Carolina and the FIGs must face a terrifying evil that threatens to destroy not only their genius, but their very lives.
