When New Zealand detective, Dylan Harper, is assigned a missing persons case in his coastal hometown, his investigation exposes murder, dirty politicians, and international corruption. After the Christchurch earthquake of 2011, Harper and veteran partner Joe Gardella are assigned to assist Westport police in the search for missing newspaper reporter, Jonathan Hayes. An early lead sends Gardella back to Christchurch, leaving Harper alone to pursue the investigation while wrestling with memories of his deeply troubled past. Harper eventually discovers that Jonathan Hayes was actually murdered to silence his knowledge of an illegal mining operation, secretly arranged between China and a prominent New Zealand politician. But by piecing things together, Harper has become their next target, and when framing him on false drug charges fails, bullets fly, leaving Dylan Harper clinging to life.
Dead Ground is book one in a four-part series by New Zealand author, Justin Warren, a teacher and former journalist who studied marketing and management at the University of Canterbury.
