Just Give Me The Road
Apr. 5, 2019
Anne Marie Romer
Non-fiction: General/Other
When my sister’s 18-year-old son suffered from a random severe traumatic brain injury, I created the Facebook page, Prayer Request for Conor, where daily entries chronicling his healing journey consistently reached 25,000-30,000 people from all over the world. Prior to Conor’s accident, we shared the spectrum of life. Reconciling the loss of two brothers to suicide, and managing schedules to care for our dying mom helped to cultivate an impenetrable cohesiveness. When Kathy and I refer to “my sister,” we are speaking about the other half of our soul.

My unique take on the grueling choice to remain in the light of Conor’ injury created an infectious movement through social media which helped to keep my sister’s spirit lifted while navigating the unthinkable. Kathy’s tragic run culminated with a random lightning strike in 2017 which burned her home to the ground. Fatigued by sustained heartbreak, I was called again to remain with her in reassurance and remind her that good will eventually rise, even amidst the ashes.

The morning after Conor's accident which left him fighting for life, my sister fell into my embrace in the Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital lobby in Chicago. I felt her need for me. “Just give me the road,” she pleaded into the safety of my arms. “I don’t care how long it takes, just give me the road.” This is the story of that road grounded in hope.
