Fiction: Debut
American Apparel immerses readers in the lives of an undocumented Latino extended family living and working in LA. While they strive to help their wealthy employers live a polished, glamorous Hollywood lifestyle, they themselves barely cling to the hope that brought them here. When Piedad Solis, a housekeeper and single mom, gets deported during an ICE raid, her high achieving teenage son, Daniel, is not only stunned to lose her, he is also shocked to learn he himself was not born in America. While Piedad risks her life to return for his graduation, Daniel struggles to finish high school, complete his college applications, and apply for DACA status. His family and friends prove vital to his survival and to his redefinition of his own identity as he pursues the elusive American Dream.
