Collision of Wills: Johnny Unitas, Don Shula and the Rise of the Modern NFL is a new book by sports writer Jack Gilden. It tells the story of the last great mystery in the NFL, the poor relationship between the league’s greatest coach and player. Unitas and Shula were the Brady and Belicheck of their era, big winners and tough men. But their inability to get along, a mystery to their adoring fans and their closest friends, cost them dearly in the biggest of games. Collision of Wills is published by the University of Nebraska Press; it will be on bookstore shelves October 1, 2018.

“The Baltimore Colts of the 1960s are one of pro football’s great under-reported stories. The fact that Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers took their headlines and championships doesn’t make them any less fascinating. With passion for the subject, extensive reporting, and sharp analysis, Jack Gilden brings to life Johnny Unitas, Don Shula, their team, their era, and their city. I thought I knew everything about Baltimore sports after covering them for more than three decades, but Collision of Wills taught me a lot.”
