The Parade of Perfidy
Jan. 15, 2018
Lawrence Helms
Fiction: Debut
Matt Tuttle, a lawyer weary with the world’s “parade of perfidy” and with his twenty-five years of successful trial work, finds himself saddled with yet another case against his long-time heart surgeon client. This time the old boy’s managed to paralyze the legs of some trauma victim while operating on the man’s chest, for god’s sake. And Matt’s already burdened by his own little paralysis over what to do about the drunken hit-and-run he committed a year before. But the gods just keep piling on—well into the case, he finds the trauma victim is the person he ran down. It’s too late, and too big, to come clean now. The three people closest to Matt, his law partner (and best friend), his young protegée, and his girlfriend, know that Matt can make -- or has made -- them accomplices, exposed to much of the shame and liability faced by him. A mere phone call by any of the four will determine where they’ll all end up.
