During World War II, American troops are stationed in Auckland, New Zealand for R & R and the city fizzes with jazz music. Seventeen-year-old Evelyn Brittain finds first love in the form of trumpet-playing American GI, Walter Franklin. But when Walter goes missing Evelyn uses a dangerous sexual encounter as a salve to her pain. Years later, married with three children, she struggles to come to terms with her losses including the son she bore as a result of that one-night stand.
