Black Rose Writing to Publish Award-Winning Comedy Writer's Memoir in 2018
Castroville, Texas, August 31, 2017
Black Rose Writing has inked a $2500 advance with Who's Who in America 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award-Winner, Andy Cowan, for the 2018 release of his comedy memoir and Hollywood survival guide, Banging My Head Against The Wall: A Comedy Writer's Guide to Seeing Stars, with foreword by Jay Leno.
The only one to have collectively written for Cheers, Seinfeld and 3rd Rock From the Sun, Cowan began his long Hollywood journey in the 80s as talent coordinator, writer and recurring performer on the classic talk show, The Merv Griffin Show. It's where he pre-interviewed Orson Welles for the last public appearance of his life, along with hundreds of iconic film, TV and political figures, and such future stars on the cusp of major fame as George Clooney and Jerry Seinfeld.
The Seinfeld writer who first pondered "the opposite" in his own life, and initially penned what became the top ten episode in which George Costanza followed the opposite of his instincts to land success, shows how the method behind the madness continues to be championed worldwide and even likened to the rise of Trump. He also connects the opposite with celebrities in his path as well as numerous stops along his own long road of writing and performing twists and turns.
This extensively illustrated work will be a humorous, fly-on-the-wall, sometimes maddening, and ultimately empowering snapshot of what it takes to navigate the Hollywood minefields and live to write about it. Students and multi-generational fans of classic talk shows and smart, carefully crafted comedy, will gain new insights into the technique and the persistence it takes to keep going. Included are strategies behind writing and performing comedy as it's happening on nationwide TV and pitching myriad never-before-seen Seinfeld stories that scratch well beyond the surface of previous Seinfeld staffer publications. Readers will walk the tightrope of creating and selling multiple original pilots they'll absorb from inception through execution, entertainment industry responses and select cathartic responses back.
Jay Leno: "Andy Cowan really makes you understand tenacity and what it's like to have your first job in show business."
