Children's: Middle Grade Fiction
Caroline Panski has one dream: to play ice hockey. But everyone in her working-class neighborhood, including her mother, in 1950s Baltimore tells her, "Boys play hockey; girls figure skate." But her determination to play hockey sends her off-kilter world into more chaos when she scuffles with the local boys who play hockey on a nearby frozen pond, too. The rejection and loneliness Caroline feels is multiplied by the racial tensions of a newly integrated city school system, as well as her beloved father off fighting the Korean War. When she befriends a new black boy, she is further shunned by her friends. More than once, Caroline reaches the brink of defeat, but her spunkiness and courage keep her focused on making the ice hockey team.
