But at the panels featuring agents who help sell film rights to books, the regular refrain was that the market is quiet. You heard lots of general mild enthusiasm for a whole host of different authors and glimmers of hope abounded, but you’d be hard pressed to say that any book — like the new ones from Jonathan Lethem, David Guterson, and Jhumpa Lahiri — came of the convention with considerably more enthusiasm and heat than it had before the doors opened.

Will Be Out in 20 Years Yes, it’s a book convention, but with the LA location many of the collateral events seem to emphasize politics and the far more local film world. At this morning’s “Books to Blockbuster” panel Twentieth Century Fox’s Tom Rothman stands apart from most of his Hollywood colleagues who have addressed the book-to-film market over the past two days, but perhaps that’s because he’s the one buyer we’ve heard from and everyone else has been a seller.

Reprint rights to Dow Mossman’s 1972 novel THE STONES OF SUMMER, the long out-of-print book that inspired Mark Moskowitz’s new film “Stone Reader” (recently honored at Sundance), to Barnes & Noble, for a reported six figures, for hardcover publication in fall 2003. The bookseller will also support the film in “up to 30 markets with advertising and promotion,” according to filmmaker Mark Moskowitz.

Everyone has the constitutional right to write a book or tell their story — even criminals have been accorded that right by the U.S. Supreme Court — and penalizing anyone for exercising that right raises serious questions. I know I am a governmental employee, but I am also a U.S. citizen. It cannot possibly be in the county’s best interest to challenge my First Amendment rights.
