The New Republic film critic and author Stanley Kauffmann, 97, died early Wednesday morning at St. Luke’s Hospital of pneumonia. Kauffmann was appointed TNR’s film critic in 1958 and published ten books of criticism, most recently REGARDING FILM: Criticism and Comment (John Hopkins University Press, 2001.) He also worked as an editor for Knopf, where he discovered the manuscript and published THE MOVIEGOER by Walker Percy, which went on to win the National Book Award.

In other briefs, ScreenDaily reports that multiple studios and production companies are pursuing film rights to Glenn Greenwald‘s book about Edward Snowden and the NSA, which Metropolitan Books acquired this summer for publication in early 2014. They claim that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and their studio partner Warner Bros. are the current leaders to acquire the rights.

The Frankfurt Book Fair’s prize for the Best International Literary Adaptation, for a film version of a book, will be presented to Lebanese director Ziad Doueiri (and his co-screenwriter and wife Joëlle Touma) for the adaptation of THE ATTACK by Yasmina Khadra. Vintage will release a portion of Robert Caro‘s The Passage of Power as a standalone digital short as the world remembers John F. Kennedy. Titled DALLAS, NOVEMBER 22, 1963, the $1.99 ebook publishes October 1.

Previously she was manager, digital rights at McGraw-Hill Professional. Roger Ebert, 70, died Thursday in Chicago from cancer. Ebert’s film criticism, which spanned 46 years working for the Chicago Sun-Times, won him a Pulitzer Prize in 1975 and was collected in many volumes, including THE GREAT MOVIES series and ROGER EBERT’S FOUR-STAR REVIEWS.
