Samantha is looking for high-concept, commercial fiction that features diverse, marginalized, and/or under-represented voices with all-or-nothing stakes.
I’m truly looking for stories that make me feel in the best way.
In all genres, I love: secret society, curses, academia, cults, murder, ensemble casts, familial relationships, witches, prophecies, buried secrets, #ownvoices LGBTQIA+ rep, disability rep, body-positivity, and non-western mythology.
I am constantly looking for upmarket, bookclub, and women’s fiction geared towards the millennial experience. That includes everything from modern dating, modern life in other countries, people growing together and/or apart, and any off-beat late-stage coming-of-age stories.
I love Contemporary Romance/Rom-Coms (Adult & YA). I love stories take a traditional narrative but make it fresh, fun, and unique. I’m particularly drawn to diverse, queer, neurodiverse, and/or disability rep. The more intersections the better! My favorite tropes are fake dating, enemies to lovers, joining forces against a mutual enemy, and messy realness.
Think: Talia Hibbert, Helen Hoang, Casey Mcquiston, and Sandhya Menon
Thrillers, Mysteries, and Suspense (Adult, YA, & MG) always get me excited to read again. I love high stakes, twisted games, ensemble casts, and stories that keep me binge-reading so fast that the words blur together.
Think: Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Courtney Summers, and Samantha Downing
I became a reader largely because of Speculative Fiction and Contemporary Fantasy (Adult, YA, & MG). The projects that capture my attention usually feel somewhat grounded in the world we know with distinct differences. I love clear power structures, dynamic world-building, light political intrigue, and fleshed-out magic systems.
Think: R.F. Kuang, Shelby Mahurin, Leigh Bardugo, and Mara Fitzgerald.
Nuanced Horror (Adult, YA, & MG) that explores the different kinds of fear, grief, mental health, and more. My taste is definitely more on the gothic and literary side here. Give me haunted houses or forests, seemingly normal small towns with secrets, and bonus points for queer, BIPOC, and disability rep!!
Think: Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Alexis Henderson, and Rory Power
