I am the founding partner of Athans & Associates Creative Consulting, and the best-selling author of Annihilation and more than a dozen other fantasy and horror books including The Guide to Writing Fantasy & Science Fiction and Writing Monsters. Born in Rochester, New York I grew up in suburban Chicago where I published the literary magazine Alternative Fiction & Poetry. I then went on to the book publishing team at TSR then Wizards of the Coast where I served as Forgotten Realms novel line editor and finally senior managing editor from 1995 to 2010. My blog, Fantasy Author’s Handbook ( https://fantasyhandbook.wordpress.com ), is updated every Tuesday, and you can follow me on Twitter @PhilAthans. I make my home in the foothills of the Washington Cascades, east of Seattle.

IF IT’S GOT WORDS, I CAN HELP MAKE IT BETTER.

For publisher clients I offer a wide range of services from extensive ghostwriting/book doctoring to copy editing with competitive rates, a fine attention to detail, a sense of collaboration, and a healthy respect for the work—and deadlines—of others. I respect confidentiality agreements and will always work to preserve your trademarks and intellectual property rights.

I always approach every edit as a teaching opportunity with an eye on not just making this book better, but every book you write after it better. Comments in the text and accompanying email will always have that in mind.

IT’S NOT JUST MY JOB TO FIND WHAT’S WRONG WITH A BOOK, BUT TO PRESERVE AND ENCOURAGE WHAT’S RIGHT ABOUT IT.

I work one-on-one with authors at all experience levels across a range of genres and categories. From a couple hours of advice to long-term consultations including text edits and specific advice on your writing and your writing career, contact me and we can discuss where you are, where you want to go, and how I can help.
