Nicole James joined Chalberg & Sussman as an agent in December 2013. Primarily focused on commercial fiction and nonfiction, Nicole is drawn to plot-driven novels with relatable characters and addictive pacing—whether she’s reading a white-knuckle thriller, a breezy beach read, an intense family drama, or a thoughtful young adult novel. Nicole is after a novel that she can sink her teeth into and often rolls up her sleeves editorially. On the nonfiction side, Nicole is seeking inspiration, how-to, and self-help; she has a soft spot for illustrated gift books, loves theater, anything animal related, and has two boys at home should any of that inspire a submission. She loves the challenge of developing books based on pre-exiting platforms as well as emerging ones.
Her adult clients include thriller authors Ben Coes, New York Times bestselling author of the Dewey Andreas series, Luca Veste, international bestselling author of The Bone Keeper, Jorgen Brekke, a #1 international bestseller, as well as celebrated Norwegian novelists Johan Harstad, author of Buzz Aldrin, What Happened to You In all the Confusion? and Maja Lunde, author of the international sensation The End of the Ocean.
Nicole’s young adult clients include Diana Harmon Asher, author of Sidetracked, a 2018 ALA Notable Book, and Nick Burd, winner of The American Library Association’s Stonewall Book Award for The Vast Fields of Ordinary. Nicole also represents select nonfiction ranging from pop-culture titles such as Manny the Frenchie’s Art of Happiness to serious memoir such as the Washington Post bestseller, A Life Everlasting: The Extraordinary Story of One Boy’s Gift to Medical Science by Sarah Gray.
Previously Nicole was the Foreign Rights Director as well as an agent at The Aaron Priest Agency, where she sold international brand name authors for the agency including David Baldacci and Robert Crais, among others.
