Founded in 2002, Modernista has in little more than a decade established itself
as one of Sweden’s leading publishing houses, now releasing about 100 titles a
year and with a backlist comprising more than 800 titles. The focus is on the
best in fiction, non-fiction, modern crime and young adult fiction.
We have a strong market presence in translating the classic European and
American literary canon. Our catalogue includes authors such as Marguerite
Duras, Vladimir Nabokov, Jean Genet, Henry James, Roland Barthes, Nathalie
Sarraute, Georges Perec, Margaret Drabble, Witold Gombrowicz, Don DeLillo,
Inger Christensen, Cormac McCarthy and Simone de Beauvoir. We also take
pride in successfully seeking out new innovators of the crime genre, such as
Gillian Flynn, Belinda Bauer, Peter May as well as translating and publishing
the best in young adult fiction: Veronica Roth, Rick Riordan, Brandon
Sanderson.
Our new editions of the Swedish translations of classic world fiction, poetry and
drama always include a newly written preface by a leading Swedish author,
critic or scholar, and we have a recurring cooperation with members of The
Swedish Academy, such as Horace Engdahl, Katarina Frostenson and Anders
Olsson.
Our list of world fiction includes works by Samuel Beckett, Fyodor
Dostoyevsky, Julio Cortázar, James Ellroy, Gertrude Stein, Cees Nooteboom,
Leo Tolstoj, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, F. Scott
Fitzgerald, Joseph Conrad, Arthur Koestler, Michail Bulgakov, William S.
Burroughs, Elias Canetti, Franz Kafka, Malcolm Lowry, António Lobo Antunes,
Ismail Kadare and many others.
And of course, we also publish new Swedish fiction and poetry. Our
commitment to seeking out the talents of an emergent generation of Swedish
authors was perhaps our strongest early trait, and it has resulted in no less than 7
winners of Borås Tidnings Debutantpris and Katapultpriset, the leading awards
for Swedish debut authors.
Our output includes all the digital formats, and most titles are printed in both
hard cover and paperback, to maximize dissemination.
Modernista is fully independent, and is owned by its founders Pietro Maglio,
publisher, and Lars Sundh, award-winning creative director.
