Second edition covers films; world-wide sales now exceed 100,000.

I'm the author of nine entertaining books on the roots of common phrases and ideas in Western culture. Three of these books cover Shakespeare, and the others range over topics as various as the Bible, great ideas, English poetry, and classical mythology.

In May, 2019, Last Gasp published Jon B. Cooke’s The Book of Weirdo, to which I contributed an “Overview” of Robert Crumb’s ’80s comix anthology.

In April, 2016, Karnac Books published Jill Gentile’s Feminine Law: Freud, Free Speech, and the Voice of Desire, to which I am a contributing writer. In the same month, Fiesta Red Records released my first solo album, Icicles and Sand, a survey of song forms from the late vinyl era.

Since the mid-90s, I've also made a career of designing and developing Web sites (including the entire Publishers Marketplace site). I'm perhaps best known as the developer and Webmaster of, a Webby-winning journal of photography and design. My work on the Grace Cathedral Web site helped win it a Webby in 2004.

Most recently, I designed the logo for Fiesta Red Records and the product package and marketing materials for the Fiesta Red releases Lowe Country, Blank Slate EP (Blue), Blank Slate EP (Red), The Rut Not Taken, Original Sins for Copycats, Liquid Courage, Interstellar Data Grab, and my own Icicles and Sand. I also provided the initial design for Feminine Law, using an illustration by Thorina Rose of San Francisco.
