As the daughter of a librarian and a businessperson, it’s really no wonder Kristin Ostby wound up in the book biz. Kristin moved from Michigan to New York to begin her life in publishing at Penguin Random House and rose to become a senior editor at Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. She was a children's book editor (and a freelance writer on the side) for sixteen years before making the switch to agenting.
Kristin has had the joy and pleasure of editing children’s book legend Tomie dePaola; New York Times bestselling authors like Stuart Gibbs (Spy School) and US soccer star Alex Morgan (The Kicks); and award-winning creators including Daniel Miyares (FLOAT), Jessica Lawson (NOOKS & CRANNIES), and Heather Vogel Frederick (The Mother-Daughter Book Club). She also edited the mainstay bestseller I DISSENT: RUTH BADER GINSBURG MAKES HER MARK by Debbie Levy and Elizabeth Baddeley. Kristin loves guiding authors and illustrators toward their best work and advocating for them in service of building successful, sustainable artistic careers.
Kristin represents authors of middle grade and young adult fiction, as well as picture book author/illustrators and select adult fiction. She is primarily seeking tightly written, tightly plotted, fast-paced commercial middle-grade and young adult fiction—adventure, mystery, and contemporary humor—as well as young adult romance.
In middle grade, Kristin is also looking for voicey, character-driven stories of the commercial or literary variety. She goes bananas for middle grade that uses humor as a tool to reveal funny, unspoken truths about kids’ experiences or to carry heavier themes about family life or the world at large. She loves books that honor children’s capacity for understanding and imagination, and she isn’t afraid of stories that artfully push the envelope in addressing evolving societal issues or norms (all wrapped in a page-turning narrative, of course).
In both middle grade and YA, Kristin has a soft spot for mystery, literary fiction, and historical fiction (or any of these in combination), and she’s also excited to explore voice- or character-driven fantasy and sci-fi, especially if they have a literary sensibility. She enjoys subversive narratives, genuinely surprising twists, and unreliable or unexpected narrators. She particularly adores stories with unabashedly intersectional overtones (feminist, LGBTQ, and BIPOC).
Kristin is seeking to add illustrators who write picture books to her client list, as well as graphic novelists—particularly those creating works for the younger end of the spectrum (5–7 years). She will also be representing select adult literary fiction and upmarket mystery.
Kristin is not accepting picture book manuscripts, issue books, or nonfiction at this time. Greenhouse does not represent poetry collections, short story collections, screenplays, erotica, or titles for the Christian/inspirational market.
ABOUT GREENHOUSE LITERARY AGENCY
Greenhouse is where authors' careers grow. A transatlantic literary agency, Greenhouse provides exceptional individual attention to each of its clients while working closely with a robust team of foreign, accounting, royalty, and contract departments. Founded in 2007, Greenhouse has since established itself at the forefront of the US and UK children’s markets and built a powerful, supportive community of bestselling and critically acclaimed clients whose books have been translated into many languages. Our vision is to work with clients in as full a way as possible, so if our authors and illustrators diversify into other markets, we are often able to represent that work, too. With our vast editorial backgrounds at major publishing houses, Greenhouse can help authors develop their voice and craft and then be their advocate and partner through the publishing process and beyond. Our sister company Rights People is an industry leader and represents our foreign rights to the rest of the world. We also have strong relationships with some of the best film agents in Hollywood, including Creative Artists Agency, The Gotham Group, United Talent Agency, Paradigm, ICM Partners, and so forth to always partner with the most passionate advocate when selling creators' dramatic rights. Most of all, Greenhouse seeks talented authors who are ready to put down roots.
