THE HEART SUTRA by RED PINE
"The Heart Sutra, a mere 35 lines, is one of Buddhism's best-known teachings, "Buddhism in a nutshell," according to Red Pine, an award-winning translator of Chinese poetry and religious writings. But when he was asked to prepare a fresh translation, he found himself reconsidering its origins, reexamining every word, and reassessing every nuance. The result is a meticulous line-by-line interpretation that will radically deepen readers' understanding of not only the sutra but also Buddhism's underlying structure, Abhidharma, or the Matrix of Reality. Red Pine begins by noting that while no one knows where the Heart Sutra came from or who composed it, he has come to believe that its roots are in Northern India, and that "the noble Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva" named in the first line is none other than an incarnation of Maya, the Buddha's mother. Red Pine then proceeds to explicate the Heart Sutra in its concentrated entirety, including its most cited pronouncement, "form is emptiness, emptiness is form," a feat that will engage and enlighten every serious student of the Dharma" -- From BOOKLIST

FLYING ARROW by H.S. KIM
Set in a Korea at the edge of the time of missionaries, this debut novel beautifully weaves together the threads of a multi-wived household, the travails of midwifery, and a budding romance. It opens as the indomitable Mrs. Huang arrives at the home of Mr. O, the wealthiest landowner in the region, to help his first wife deliver a child. She is too late, Mistress Kim is dead. For Mr. O, for his second wife Mistress Yee, for the maids and servants, the monks and peasants in the village, and for the baby girl who survives, nothing -- yet everything -- will remain the same.

H.S. Kim is unexpected, unusual, and very refreshing, and like Lisa See and Amy Tan, she knows how to tell an exotic yet familiar story. Kim arrived in the U.S. when she was 20 and got a job at Burger King for six months -- since she was jet-lagged, she chose the night shift. She went on to graduate from University of Washington and then Columbia University. Kim lives in Berkeley, CA with her husband and two children.

Born in Pontiac and a life-long resident of Michigan, Israel has been a state trooper, an interviewer of Holocaust survivors on film, a teacher in local colleges, and a well-published freelance writer.

Brenna Barzenick's decision to trade in her successful physical therapy practice for full-time mothering might have turned her world upside down but it's led to this wonderful witty and wise collection of articles. Barzenick forever debunks the myth that being a stay-at-home mother isn't a "real" job and gives a voice to those harried, frustrated, noble, and loving mothers who have one of the hardest jobs in the world. So to all you moms out there, ignore the sink of dirty dishes, let the kids watch just one more cartoon, and treat yourself to the funny, unpredictable, and ultimately wonderful world of TSUMOMMY!
