I have 30 years' personal experience living in recovery from Bipolar Disorder. So what is new about this book? I do write about mental health services, including therapy, ECT, and community and state hospitals. but from a user, not professional viewpoint. I have powerful stories that describe the journey from serious mental illness to recovery. I am now a working, productive person who has her life back. Most importantly, I know what it takes to beat this disease. In addition to my own knowledge bank, I have received countless training in mental health and recovery topics. I write about tried and true recovery concepts that are endorsed nationally, yet are not well known to the public. The book includes poems, artwork, vignettes of others in recovery, information on recovery, and memoir.
I work for the State of Washington as the Manager of the Office of Consumer Partnerships, a highly visible position which allows me to travel the state and meet with peers and families everywhere. I am a trainer for Mental Health First Aid, Wellness Recovery Action Plans, peer counseling and NAMI's Peer to Peer trainings.
I am part of many national networks, including Mental Health America, National Alliance on Mental Illness, International Association of Peer Supporters, Mind Freedom, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and the National Association of Consumer/Survivor Mental Health Program Administrators. I present frequently at conferences for many organizations, statewide and nationally.
