Time flies by when I'm on the keyboard, it's pure enjoyment. For me, exploring the emotional and psychological motivations behind why people do the things they do really helps me to connect with my characters as well as my audience. One of my pet peeves in bad writing is plot cheating; when characters do things that real people would never do if placed in the situation; i.e., a kid round-house kicking a raptor in the face. Yah right, they'd pee their pants. The situation may be pure fantasy, but the character must still adhere to basic human instincts and emotions, otherwise it's impossible for me to connect with them.
I especially love exploring situations and settings in my writing that stir up childhood nostalgia, taking me back to those impressionable and emotionally charged years, to those feelings that seem to dull as we get older and wiser. Who's the real fool? Kids enjoy Disneyland better than adults, so take me back to then. I also feel it my responsibility to inspire my reader once I've hooked them emotionally. A writer who fails to do this is like a marathon runner trotting around the finish line; all that hard work for nothing. I hope to connect with you soon.
