Literary Agent Lee Sobel

An agent should have:

* Good communication skills!
* Knowledge of the marketplace!
* Creative ideas to help their authors!
* Strategic planning to progress their authors' careers!
* Passion and love for what they do!
* Kindness, politeness and respect!
* The ability to sell, sell, sell!

I am the son of a highly successful literary agent (Nat Sobel). I have had a lifetime of observing his incredible ability to nurture the careers of authors, be a keen negotiator, stay on the cutting edge of an ever-changing book publishing industry, and to always put a high value on being ethical. As an agent, I only take a standard literary agent's commission -- I do not charge reading fees or anything that I feel is dishonest.

If you're looking for an agent you should make a list of questions such as:

* Has the agent sold the kinds of books you are writing? (Be sure to look at a list of the books they have sold recently - does it look like you would fit well on that list?)
* Does the agent have a passion for the kinds of books you are writing?
* Will the agent take the time to speak with you or meet with you to discuss the marketplace and how they might help your career?
* Is the agent willing to let you speak to any of their clients to hear their first-hand experience working with their agent?

I sell very little fiction. I wish that was not the case. Frankly, I rarely get sent fiction that I fall in love with. First and foremost, regardless of the genre, I like novels that make me feel intensely emotionally invested in the main character(s). If the author does not make me feel deeply for their characters, I will have no interest in their book. Also, I am a firm believer that anyone writing a novel must pay their dues by writing short fiction and getting it published. Short stories teach writers how to tell stories economically and if you have not had short stories published I will most likely not be interested in reading your novel. My favorite genres are suspense thrillers, horror, mysteries and science fiction. I'd love to be involved with YA or children's books but you'd be better off finding an agent that knows those worlds as I have yet to make any sales in those markets.
