The University of Alabama Press seeks an experienced Project Editor to join the editorial department.
Required minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree, preferably in the humanities or social sciences, and at least two (2) years of experience in publishing. An internship at a publishing house or research or teaching support within a university environment may be counted toward years of experience.
Required skills and knowledge:
Extensive knowledge of the rules of the English language as well as strong competence in editing scholarly material
Demonstrated knowledge of grammar, spelling, and usage
Working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and familiarity of other various book-publishing style manuals is preferred
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word and Outlook)
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (particularly Acrobat and InDesign)
Technological savvy, including the ability to learn and adapt to new developments and train others in their use
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines is essential
Strong organization skills
Keen attention to details
Ability to set priorities, work independently, and maintain tight schedules, including occasional work during evenings, weekends, and university breaks as needed
Mac OS proficient
Database management
Effective written and oral communications
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters or other advanced degree in the humanities or social sciences
Proven competence in editing across multiple academic disciplines
Rich intellectual knowledge and a strong scholarly background
Fluent with the comment and markup feature in Adobe Acrobat
Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign
Familiarity with ebook technologies
