Requirements:
Getty Publications is seeking a full-time Assistant Editor. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Assistant Editor assists Publications staff with numerous tasks and projects related to the development of print and digital publications, from conception through editing, design, and production.

Successful candidates will be meticulous, organized, and motivated to develop knowledge of editorial work and publishing through mentorship, training, and work assignments.

Getty Publications produces award-winning books that result from or complement the work of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Foundation. The approximately 35 books published each year cover the fields of art, photography, archaeology, architecture, conservation, and the humanities for both the general public and specialists. Ranging from exhibition and collection catalogues to scholarly monographs and edited collections to trade and children’s books, most titles are published in print, but an increasing number are published digitally as well.

Note: Los Angeles residency is required. This position is NOT fully remote and consists of a hybrid in-office and work-from-home schedule.

Major Job Responsibilities

*Assists editors and department coordinators with administrative tasks, including filing applications for Library of Congress data and copyright registration
*Gathers materials and enters data in title management system for seasonal launch meetings
*Drafts promotional copy for sales catalogs and book jackets
*Conducts assigned research and fact-checking for editors and other Publications staff
*Performs editorial functions, including cold reading, copyediting, and proofreading
*Compiles book illustration credits in collaboration with image-rights coordinators
*Assists with project management of print and digital publications, including communicating with book team members, Curatorial, Conservation,
*Image Services, Exhibitions, Development, Registrar, external authors, and freelancers regarding project status and issues
*Prepares manuscripts for peer review, copyediting, and transmittal to Design
*Checks hard copy and digital proofs
*Prepares and checks updates and errata for reprints

Qualifications

*Bachelor's degree in the humanities (preferably in English or Art History); MA preferred
*1-3 years in publishing, preferably in a museum or university press environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

*Excellent grasp of spelling, punctuation, and grammar; some experience copyediting and proofreading; some familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
*Microsoft Office proficiency
*Familiarity with art history
*Reading knowledge or familiarity with one or more languages in addition to English a plus
*Excellent organizational and communication skills
