Requirements:
Indiana University Press publishes 100-110 new books annually, with lists that emphasize scholarship in the humanities and social sciences but also prominently feature trade and reference titles. We seek an Editorial Director to lead the Press’s acquisitions department.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Works with staff to coordinate seasonal list management goals and achieve individual objectives
Acquires 20-25 books per year in select scholarly fields
Provides mentorship and guidance to other acquisitions editors, assistants, and interns as appropriate
Maintains the Press’s commitment to a collegial, collaborative workplace culture that fosters diversity, inclusivity, and intellectual inquiry
Represents the Press at conferences, professional meetings, and university events as necessary
General Responsibilities
Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define publications and print production methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority publications and print production projects/initiatives
Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase publications and print production initiatives
Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal
Manages high level assignments and allocation of publications and print production resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale publications and print production projects with a wide range of audiences in support of academic initiatives
Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment
Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry publications and print production standards, technology, equipment, and methodology; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs
Works collaboratively with other publications and print production leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures
Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to publications and print production
EDUCATION
Required
Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
4 years in relevant field
1 year of management experience in relevant field
Preferred
2 years of experience in acquisitions at a scholarly/academic press
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
