The role of executive editor will focus exclusively on hands-on creative work with authors, agents, and publishers, including building books from the ground up and evaluating and editing full-length manuscripts and pitch materials. Along with big titles with major publishers, you will also have an opportunity to help writers typically shut out by traditional publishing.
The ideal candidate will have experience with multiple genres, though we are most interested in an editor with a strong background in sci-fi and/or fantasy.
This role also includes cultivating and nurturing potential and existing client relationships with agents, publishers, editors, and authors. Considerable sales commission bonuses will be granted for bringing in any business related to our firm's services.
As a member of the management team, the executive editor will be a key contributor to the ongoing development of the company, including keeping the team informed about market trends and offering insight into potential growth opportunities.
Salary range $90k-$140K, commensurate with experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Develop, nurture, and maintain new and ongoing relationships with authors, agents, publishers, and other industry professionals
* Assess pitch materials and provide critical review and analysis
* Determine which editors, publishers, and agents would be ideally suited for our clients' projects
* Develop/oversee and/or edit pitch materials on behalf of our clients
* Contribute to senior management initiatives to grow and improve our firm's service offerings and growth strategy
* Review, edit, and evaluate book concepts and full-length manuscripts; provide feedback and revisions to authors/writers/ghostwriters
* Participate in and lead publishing strategy and book-planning sessions with clients and writers
* Maintain up-to-date records of all projects in the appropriate systems
* Maintain extensive knowledge of current market trends, especially within core categories
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
* Bachelor's degree
* Must have 10+ years combined experience as an senior/executive editor, literary agent, publisher, or other closely related position at a publisher
* Established relationships with agents, publishers, and industry professionals
* Strong understanding and awareness of the general marketplace and relevant market segments within the publishing industry
* Extensive industry knowledge of both the publishing process and market trends
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
* Excellent conversation and presentation skills, with an ability to quickly establish rapport and react effectively in dynamic, fluid, customer-facing situations
* Self-motivated, hands-on, and creative with exceptional oral, written, presentation, and negotiation skills
* Ability to understand and quickly acquire in-depth knowledge of services offered, carefully analyze customer needs, and present solutions
