Job Summary: The New Press seeks an Editorial Assistant to support two members of the editorial staff as well as the department more generally. This is an exciting opportunity to work on serious nonfiction book projects from acquisition through publication at a leading publisher of social justice and other public interest books. The job entails ongoing administrative support tasks, preparing and transmitting manuscripts, liaising with authors, supporting workflow around the press’s seasonal lists, managing administrative duties for weekly editorial meetings, and supporting key publicity tasks for each title. The Editorial Assistant works closely with all departments in the organization and must be comfortable working independently and collaboratively. It is a key position that requires initiative and critical thinking, and comes with substantial responsibility. Discretion, judgment, good writing skills, and the ability to juggle many tasks and prioritize thoughtfully are extremely important.
This job will be a hybrid position, combining remote work and in-office work at The New Press’s offices on Wall Street in New York City.

●     Work closely with two editors to provide ongoing support for the titles they handle; liaise with Director of Editorial Programs for key department-wide tasks relating to the weekly editorial meeting, editorial retreats, and other department-wide events and undertakings
●     Transmit manuscripts to the Managing Editor for production according to in-house procedures
●     Prepare finished book letters/emails; mail galleys and finished books
●     Correspond as needed with authors and/or their representatives
●     Track contracts and advances
●     Prepare materials and take minutes for editorial meetings
●     Support the creation of catalogue copy, jacket copy, and marketing tip sheet
●     General administrative tasks include but are not limited to handling email and print correspondence; photocopying, and database upkeep, etc.

The ideal candidate will have:
●     A Bachelor’s degree
●     An interest in/exposure to some of the fields in which The New Press publishes (criminal justice, progressive education, racial justice, immigration, environmental justice, popular economics, etc.)
●     An interest in and commitment to the ideals of The New Press, a not-for-profit, public interest publisher
●     Excellent written and oral presentation; a collegial demeanor and strong interpersonal skills
●     Accuracy and attention to detail
●     Exceptional organizational skills, diplomacy, proactiveness, and initiative
●     An ability to juggle multiple projects, provide status updates, and (with time) anticipate needs
●     A propensity to meet deadlines
●     Ample experience with MS Office (including Excel) and a general facility with digital/tech matters
●     Experience at a publishing house (a plus)
●     Fluency in one or more foreign languages (a plus)
