This is a remarkable opportunity for a highly motivated and engaged publishing leader. Since its founding in 1973, Guilford Press has been an editorially-driven publisher. The new Editor-in-Chief will carry on that legacy, establishing the editorial vision and future product growth plans for the company, including an expansion of the current book and journal programs as well as an exploitation of new business and product models that allow Guilford’s customers innovative ways to access and use our content. Guilford Press operates in a hybrid work environment. As such, the ideal candidate should have proximity to metro NYC. However, an outstanding remote candidate will be considered.


Position Summary

Reporting to the CEO, and working in close conjunction with the other functional department leaders who each oversee large areas of Guilford’s operations, the Editor-in-Chief establishes the long-term vision for future product growth at the company as well as manages the day-to-day operations of a large team of acquisition and production editors and support staff. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing strategies to drive revenue growth and maintaining Guilford’s long-held reputation for editorial quality and rigor across all publishing segments.


The successful candidate will be customer-savvy and capable of developing and executing innovative editorial strategies that will help transform Guilford Press for future growth. We are interested in meeting with candidates who:

·      Are skilled relationship managers with authors, colleagues, partners, and other key stakeholders;

·      Have managed large teams successfully and have a track record of making workflow changes or reallocating resources when needed;

·      Have prior successful editorial experience working in our markets (or similar fields);

·      Can demonstrate successful examples of launching new products.


Key Responsibilities


Overall editorial vision and direction

·      Identify and execute ways to maximize revenue growth by leveraging current digital content in new ways (such as new product and/or business models). Work with CEO and other key stakeholders to evaluate options and funnel resources as needed to execute prioritized plans.

·      Develop a program to help attract a deeper pool of first-time “rising star” authors to Guilford.

·      Manage appropriate levels of acquisition targets and transmittal rates.

·      Work with acquisition and production teams to maximize workflow efficiencies, driving changes as needed.

·      Develop and execute consistent evaluation and development of all editorial programs.

·      Develop and execute succession plans for staff as needed.

·      Monitor sales trends and competitive environment in key subject areas.


Day-to-day operations

·      Supervise Acquisition and Production/Manuscript Editorial departments.

·      Play active coaching role with acquisition staff on current/proposed projects.

·      Oversee issues related to contracts with authors, outside editors, agents, and vendors related to development of new products.

·      Manage all resources associated with product development (both budget and staff-related).

·      Determine process for day-to-day editorial decisions (page count, design, print runs, etc.), acting as final decision-maker as needed.

·      Directly handle acquisitions for subject area(s) to be determined.


Leadership team responsibilities

·      Participate in strategic planning process with CEO and other functional leaders.

·      Elevate the Guilford brand by helping to create a more outward-facing presence for the company with key stakeholders, partners, clients, industry associations and advocacy groups.

·      Represent department as needed at advisory board meetings and external conferences and events.

·      Assist sales and rights teams with planning seasonal priorities based on publication schedules and participate in business reviews with key partners as needed.

·      Collaborate with marketing on development and execution of annual marketing plans.

·      Collaborate on development of pricing and inventory planning initiatives.
