Position Purpose:

The Editorial Director will oversee the editorial strategy and development of the Timber Press list, which is focused primarily on illustrated nonfiction in the categories of nature, science, gardening, and regional publishing. The Editorial Director will work closely with the Publisher and senior management on shaping seasonal lists, managing schedules and budgets, ensuring published books are of the highest quality, and ensuring that Timber Press is on trend and stands out in the market.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with the Publisher to determine publishing strategies that result in sales growth and increased brand awareness
Lead, develop, and inspire the editorial team in acquisitions, packaging, positioning, and publication schedule
Cultivate and maintain a broad network of contacts within communities relevant to Timber’s publishing program; keep abreast of trends, current issues, and emerging personalities within those worlds.
Investigate promising new subjects and niches; generate original ideas for new publishing projects; research new avenues to expand Timber’s list and audience.
Work closely with editorial and design as contracted books move from accepted manuscript to publication to develop structure, focus, and content; continue the shaping of each book to meet the needs of the market
Acquire and edit book projects, minimum 3-4 titles per year.
Work with an entrepreneurial spirit, pursuing ideas for book projects, as well as innovative ways to publish; pursue and publish books with a long-term vision, always focusing on backlist potential

Education/Skill Requirements:

Minimum of 6-8 years of editorial experience with a focus on illustrated nonfiction, in increasing leadership roles
Significant team building and management experience; the ability to inspire others to work together for mutual benefit
Drive change and innovation by improving work product or process; challenge established norms where appropriate
Ability to manage a variety of projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Superior writing and editing skills; excellent presentation, organization, and written and oral communication skills
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with authors, agents, and staff
