The company covers a wide publishing program of literary fiction and nonfiction, memoir, biography, cookbook, humor, self-help, mystery/suspense, politics, and current events.

Job Overview:

Art Director position at Little, Brown and Company / Trade Adult Division.

Position consists of design, art direction and production responsibilities for approximately 50 hardcover and paperback assignments on a 3-season publishing schedule per year.

Art Director will be part of a 7-person art department and will report directly to the Creative Director. The company is on a 2 day in-office / 3-day work-from-home hybrid workweek schedule. Art Director will be responsible to be on-site at the New York offices on Mondays and Tuesdays of each week.

Art Director needs to have a mature “team-player” attitude and be able to speak with editors and authors in a cordial, knowledgeable, and professional manner. Excellence in verbal and written communication skills essential for the position. Ability and agility in juggling multiple assignments weekly, with diligence to revision requests in a timely manner.

Skills, Abilities and Requirements Needed:

Experience in designing unique and creative hardcovers and paperbacks in both literary and commercial genres.
Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and all Adobe Suite. Hand lettering and illustration skills a plus, but not required.
Experience in art directing photoshoots, commissioning of illustration/photography and managing freelance designers.
Solid and thorough production experience needed with pdf workflow as well as open printer files.
Some experience with mass market format a plus but not required.
2-4 years active experience in an art department required.
