The Production (and optionally Art Director) is a full-time managerial position reporting directly to the President and Publisher. This position is located in Chelsea Green’s offices in White River Junction, Vermont, or upon mutual agreement, the Production and Art Director may work remotely.

The Production and Art Director has the overall responsibility for the production and manufacturing of all Chelsea Green titles (both new titles and reprints) from manuscript to bound book, and oversees the general feel of our brand. The Production Director oversees and works closely with the Senior Designer and the Reprint and Digital Production Manager and other freelance designers and editors. She/He also works closely with the President and Publisher, Editorial Director, VP of Business Development and Global Sales, Director of Marketing and Sales Analytics, Business Director, and other editorial and administrative colleagues to ensure the timely, cost-efficient, quality production of all Chelsea Green titles.

• Oversee and coordinate editorial-production and manufacturing activities with the Publisher
• Participate in weekly management meetings and planning activities
• Attend weekly project schedule meetings and acquisitions meetings
• Oversee all freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, cover designers and indexers

Project Management for Select Front-List Titles
• Establish, monitor, and maintain schedules
• Contract, review, and oversee work of freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers
• Coordinate typesetting
• Proofread corrections to pages and revised pages
• Coordinate author production-related activities
• Copyedit and proofread miscellaneous front matter, back matter, and cover and jacket copy
• Upload final print files to text printer and review soft and hard-copy proofs of text and cover and jacket
• Review production and freelance invoices for accuracy, code, and approve

Cover and Page Design
• Coordinate cover and page design for frontlist titles, including scheduling and running cover meetings for the US office located in Vermont
• Discuss the trim, page count, and art program for frontlist titles with the publisher, editorial, and sales

• Obtain and evaluate manufacturing bids for books, catalogs, and miscellaneous advertising materials
• Issue manufacturing purchase orders
• Obtain carrier quotes and coordinate carrier information with printer
• Arrange for drop shipments

• Coordinate with and oversee the preparation of files for alternative sales venues (PODs, eBooks, audio, Braille, large print, foreign publishers, etc.)
• Organize and maintain Chelsea Green’s digital archives

Position Requirements
• Minimum 5 years’ in-house book-publishing editorial-production and manufacturing experience
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously on time and on budget
• Experience with production financial analysis, including project P&Ls
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications Word, Excel, and Outlook and with Adobe Acrobat and FTP-client software
• Competence with graphics software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) a plus
• Fully competent in writing/editing skills
• Two years’ managerial experience preferred
