Little Bee Books is looking for a Designer for all children’s imprints including Little Bee Books, BuzzPop, and Yellow Jacket. We are a children’s book publisher dedicated to making high-quality, creative, and fun books for busy little bees of all ages. Little Bee Books offers an inspired selection of board books, novelty books, activity books, picture books, chapter books, nonfiction, gift sets, middle grade fiction, graphic novels, and more. **Hybrid schedule in the office two days per week and must be local as the position will be based out of our New York City office**

The Designer is responsible for every element of book creation—from working with Editorial on the initial concept to the final output of print-ready files. The Designer will work with Editorial, Sales, Marketing/Publicity, Managing Editorial, and Production to ensure that all art and design needs are met for individual titles, spanning across all children’s books formats and genres.

Main Responsibilities:
• To create smart, beautiful design for our books.
• Develop and maintain a relationship with illustrators
• Collaborate with Art Director, design team, and Editorial team on new ideas and projects.
• Work with Editorial department to determine book concepts and find appropriate illustrators for each concept.
• Route books throughout various stages of development, gaining the necessary approvals to finalize.
• Oversee work of junior designers as needed
• Manage freelancers as needed
• Provide art direction to illustrators based on feedback from various contributors.
• Procure and manage stock art/photos and fonts as necessary.
• Manage photo assets, and art direct photoshoots as needed
• Work with international publishers to create translated co-editions or titles.
• Present covers to in-house team.
• Make in-house corrections to text, and art/color as necessary.
• Hand letter titles and other text elements.
• Manage schedules of overlapping projects.
• Complete preflight and output final book files for the printer.
• Manage the creation (by external vendor) and processing of e-book files for select titles.
• Make reprint corrections to backlist titles (i.e. copyright updates, spine adjustments, etc.)
• Create advertisements and other visuals for sales and marketing/publicity.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred, or college course work and knowledge gained through equivalent work experience.
• 3-5 years of professional children’s publishing design experience required.
• Proficiency in InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator required.
• Strong foundation in typography and book layout.
• Experience with picture books, novelty books, and activity books required.
• Experience with licensed publishing strongly preferred.
• Experience with graphic novels strongly preferred.
• Excellent attention to detail and while managing multiple projects and tight production deadlines
• Strong aesthetic and the ability to communicate creative direction.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently, and with minimal supervision.

• Good verbal and written communication skills.
