Quarto is currently seeking a creative, collaborative, and dynamic Editorial Director to lead its Walter Foster and Walter Foster Jr imprints. This is an innovative role focused on trend driven, original titles as well as series driven publishing across a variety of practical art and craft instruction titles, alongside a small and focused children’s list. This change agent will be key to leading Walter Foster into the future by establishing an instruction-focused portfolio approach, building relationships with current and future authors, exploring new market segments and delivery formats, and developing rigorous guidelines for producing titles that bring the authors’ vision to life while meeting clear market needs, advancing the company’s strategic initiatives, and contributing to the brand.

Celebrating 100 Years of publishing excellence this year, this household name in art instruction offers the most complete library of how-to art and craft books written by experts for DIY enthusiasts of all levels. Walter Foster’s goal is to help artists and crafters of all levels find and embrace their inner artist with confidence.

The Editorial Director is primarily responsible for driving a list of 40-50 titles annually, negotiating work contracts and maintaining relationships with authors. A developer and cultivator of relationships, the Editorial Director must have a strong knowledge of the art and craft market and build a network of prospective author candidates who are experts in their respective fields. Reporting to the Group Publisher, the Editorial Director will recognize the ways that cross-functional teams must work in concert at every stage to achieve business goals.

We are looking for someone with a proven record for publishing successful, high-quality non-fiction, and strong relationships with agents and authors to build on the existing long-term editorial strategy, who will personally acquire and manage book projects, and drive the balance of acquisitions across the list. You will have a track record of acquiring and editing groundbreaking books in the category.

Other Responsibilities Include:
• Setting clear priorities, you manage expectations, negotiate alternatives, communicate risks and progress, ensure timely follow-through, and problem solve in a compassionate and practical manner.
• Negotiating contracts within established parameters of the financial targets set for the project and consulting with legal when needed.
• Understanding the financial implications in the contract and using established P&L forms and systems.
• Vetting and identifying the strongest candidates to match editor and project needs, including researching author platforms.
• Managing the lifecycle of the editorial process from acquisition to publication, maintaining an effective relationship with production, managing editorial/copyediting, cover and interior design, and other departments
• Oversee the preparation of title information sheet and jacket, online, metadata and catalog copy
• Conduct and evaluate title sales research, as it relates to acquisition P&Ls
• Partner with the publicity and marketing teams on campaigns for publication

Key Results Areas Include:
• Lead the vision-setting for Walter Foster titles to serve, engage, and grow audiences by spotting key trends, and constantly reassessing the editorial strategy
• Remain current with the Art & Craft field while continuously analyzing the competitive environment and consumer trends and publishing ahead of the curve.
• Conceive, develop, and acquire original titles to each list, researching and enlisting appropriate authors
• Serve as the primary creative contact with licensor contacts for specific book projects throughout the creative development and production process
• Set clear goals for the team and maintain focus with frequent feedback, performance discussions, and development initiatives.

• Broad knowledge of the art book market and other publishing categories.
• Prefer at least 7 years acquisition experience or equivalent experience in an editorial or product development role.
• An understanding of content development and the editorial and marketing factors that enable books to succeed.
• Creative, fresh ideas from major media, artists and crafters and social media include IG, TikTok, and influential bloggers/websites.
• A track record of acquiring and publishing profitable and critically acclaimed books
• Excellent negotiation skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and eloquent and impactful presentation abilities
• Skilled leader known for clear and concise communication and collaborative work style and an effective, goal-oriented team player who can cultivate productive working relationships
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Proficiency in creative problem-solving, decision making, time management, and setting priorities
• Apply understanding of financial drivers and goals to develop business plans and justifications for every potential acquisition.

Supervisory Responsibilities
The individual in this role will directly manage a team of 2 employees and work with a remote team of design editorial and production team members.
