Job Summary :
The Senior Designer primarily interacts with the Art, Editorial and Production departments ensuring all work is produced on time, to budget, and to a high standard for their assigned list. The Senior Designer is highly motivated, has strong communication and time management skills, as well as attention to detail, and is able to work within a team structure. Position Responsibilities:
• Conceptualizes and generates creative and innovative designs for covers & interiors of established series, novelty titles, and original book designs for Children’s titles including picture books, middle grade, graphic novels, and YA fiction and nonfiction.
• Oversees all stages of book production from concept through mechanicals to final production including file preparation, color correction, and reviewing printer proofs.
• Works closely with the Design Director to maintain the highest quality of design and production standards while keeping on track with deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
• Works with illustrators from initial sketch development through revisions, and final art.
• Maintains ongoing communications and schedules with the Editorial, Photo, Managing Editorial, and Production departments to ensure timely execution and follow-through for all assigned titles.
• Oversees freelance illustrators and designers when required.
• Ensures that the designs fulfill Sterling’s high standards and represent the brand.
• Attends weekly status and design meetings.
• Stays abreast of market and design trends, changes in publishing industry, and of new techniques that will improve the efficiency and creativity.
• Research and hire illustrators in conjunction with Design Director.

Position Requirements:
• Proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, with knowledge of applications in children’s book design and production.
• Detailed knowledge of pre-press requirements for print: manufacturing process, proofing, and color correction. Experience with 1-color and 4-color printing process, and PDF workflow.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
• Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Hardworking, self-starting, collaborative, and able to work independently.
• Relationships with agents and illustrators is a plus
• Experience in Children’s publishing, with proven track record of designing picture books, middle grade, YA, graphic novels, and board books.

Qualifications :
• Minimum 5-7 years design experience in children’s book publishing.
• 4-year college degree preferably in Graphic Design, or equivalent work experience
