Little Bee Books is looking for a Designer for the BuzzPop imprint. We are a children’s book publisher dedicated to making high-quality, creative, and fun books for busy little bees ages 0 through 16. Little Bee Books offers an inspired selection of early learning concept books, board books, novelty books, activity books, picture books, chapter books, nonfiction, gift sets, and more. *This position is temporarily remote and will be based full-time out of our New York City offices.

The Designer is responsible for every element of licensed book creation—from working with Editorial on the initial concept and asset selection, to the final output of print-ready files. They work with Editorial and the Licensors, Sales, Marketing/Publicity, Managing Editorial, and Production to ensure that all art and design needs are met for individual titles, spanning across all licensed children’s books formats and genres.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work closely with Art Director regularly reporting on progress.
• Work with BuzzPop Editorial to determine book concepts that fit licensor assets.
• Work with Licensors to procure assets and style guides.
• Ensure that assets are correct, complete, and contain everything that is needed for the book/project.
• Follow licensor style guides to ensure requirements and standards are met.
• Oversee work of junior designers on a project by project basis.
• Seek out, and then art direct artists as necessary, based on feedback from various contributors.
• Oversee procurement of art/design files from other companies for re-packaged titles.
• Procure and manage stock art/photos and fonts as necessary.
• Manage photo assets, and art direct photoshoots.
• Route books throughout various stages of development, gaining the necessary approvals to finalize.
• Present covers to in-house team.
• Make in-house corrections to text, and art/color as necessary.
• Hand letter titles and other text elements.
• Manage schedules of overlapping projects.
• Post images for sales and manage sales image archive throughout book production.
• Complete preflight and output final book files for the printer.
• Manage the creation (by external vendor) and processing of e-book files for select titles.
• Ensure files are archived properly on the server.
• At the end of a license, work with Licensor to deliver complete files to them and destroy in-house versions.
• Make reprint corrections to backlist titles (i.e. copyright updates, spine adjustments, etc.)
• Create advertisements and other visuals for sales and marketing/publicity.
• Assist the rest of the Design team with non-licensed projects when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred, or college course work and knowledge gained through equivalent work experience.
• 3-5 years of professional design experience required.
• Design capacity in children’s publishing required.
• Proficiency in InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator required.
• Strong foundation in typography and book layout.
• Experience with picture books, novelty books, and activity books licenses required.
• Excellent attention to accuracy and quality while managing multiple projects and meeting tight production deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong aesthetic and the ability to communicate creative direction.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently, and with minimal supervision.

• Good verbal and written communication skills.

• Design portfolio required.
