Position Summary
ABRAMS is looking for a highly creative, innovative and collaborative Associate Art Director to join the Children’s Books team, dedicated to the design of young adult, middle-grade, and chapter books under the Amulet Books imprint, and overseeing the imprint as a whole. This is a great opportunity for someone with exceptional creative vision and technical skills to have a hand in shaping the covers of our award-winning Amulet list.

The Associate Art Director, Amulet Books will manage all aspects of design, including covers and interiors, from concepting and mood-boards to final proof approvals. Candidates should thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven environment, enjoy working as part of a collaborative team, be inspired by growing established series, concepting new series, and be passionate about book design. This position reports to the Art Director, Children’s Books and manages the Senior Designer.

· Oversee, manage and art direct Amulet imprint with a focus on YA
· Design covers, interiors and components of approximately 20-25 new titles per year.
· Assist Art Director in overseeing department
· Manage, art direct and mentor senior designer
· Define and retain look and feel of Amulet Books
· Create mood-boards for new projects providing a wide range of illustration talent to fulfill the needs of each project
· Scout, hire and art direct freelance designers and illustrators.
· Layout of interiors pages into design mechanicals and sample pages
· Make corrections to routing mechanicals and release to production
· Have a strong list of illustrator contacts
· Work closely with editors, authors, designers and team to define the look and feel of each cover, series design, and interior

Required Skills / Experience:
· Minimum of 10 years of design experience in children’s book publishing with a proven track record in the young adult and middle-grade field
· Excellent attention to detail
· Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills
· Experience in series branding design
· Experience working with high-profile authors
· Creativity, originality, willingness to experiment, learn, grow and share knowledge with the design and editorial teams
· Understanding of the commercial market and design trends of middle-grade series and commercial YA book covers
· Ability to manage multiple freelance designers and work with outside packagers
· Expert in Adobe Design Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) on a Mac platform
· Motivated to learn, grow, research, solve problems, and work closely with team members
