Publicity Manager (Remote, United States)
1517 Media Books

The Publicity Manager, 1517 Media Books, leads the publicity efforts for 1517 Media’s three book imprints, Broadleaf Books, Beaming Books, and Fortress Press. The Publicity Manager creates and executes impactful PR campaigns generating buzz and driving sales for titles published by Broadleaf Books through review and media bookings, as well as events and appearances. With the overall responsibility to put our imprints on the map in the eyes of the publishing industry and our core audiences by positively showcasing our brands and authors, the publicity manager also supervises the publicist responsible for promoting Beaming Books and Fortress Press titles.

The Publicity Manager reports to the Senior Director of Marketing for 1517 Media Books and is a member of the dynamic and highly collaborative marketing and sales team responsible for driving the growth of our three book imprints, Fortress Press, Broadleaf Books, and Beaming Books.

The Publicity Manager will:
• Lead the publicity strategy for Broadleaf, Beaming, and Fortress Press brands
o Generate brand placement in key trade, library, and progressive Christian outlets
o Ensure PR strategy aligns with broader business goals
o Pitch features on the imprints and product lines
o Respond to calls for information on key topics that align with brand goals
o Prioritize execution within and between books and imprints based upon business goals and opportunities
o Manage PR budget lines, prioritize spending to revenue-driving tactics
o Create and execute emergency response plans
• Create and execute impactful publicity plans for Broadleaf Books titles
o Team with marketing manager to ensure successful PR alignment with campaign strategy
o Write and assemble press kits
o Direct and mobilize authors to leverage their contacts in securing publicity for their book
o Secure national media for Broadleaf including interviews, off-the-book page features
o Pitch select regional media in areas that align with campaign strategy
o Book author events and tours for select titles, and support authors in booking appearances
o Organize author events and tours for select titles
o Organize Blog and Podcast Tours
o Pull curated lists of media targets
o Make pitch calls
• Lead publicity team
o Supervise publicist
o Oversee overall PR strategy and execution for Broadleaf Books, Beaming Books, and Fortress Press
o Advise on pitch
o Advise on media and event targets
o Review and approve campaign strategy and pitch
o Ensure the timely mailing of ARC and review copies to media lists, and the timely and effective execution of pitch calls
• Cultivate strong strategic relationships with key external and internal stakeholders
o Pitch author representation at tradeshows and festivals
o Meet with and establishes strong relationships with retail and library event planners
o Set up seasonal pitch meetings with key trade, national, and niche media
o Serve on cross-functional teams, advising on acquisitions, product development, and positioning
o Team with sales, production, and inventory management to problem solve stock issues that impact events and media
o Maintain clear and frequent reporting of PR activities, both verbal and in writing
• Complete other duties as assigned

Desired education and experience:
• B.A. in marketing, English or other closely related field
• 7-10 years of experience working in book publicity
• Experience in book trade and/or consumer publishing or related media fields is critical

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Able to digest complicated narratives and formulate thoughtful, persuasive, and succinct pitches for media targets
• Maintains strong relationships with key media and events contacts
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong presentation skills, experience pitching media
• Ability to manage simultaneous projects with demonstrated attention to detail
• Must be able to thrive in a highly collaborative environment
• Passion for books
• Demonstrated knowledge of the book publicity landscape
• Familiarity with religion and religious life
