Sales Manager (Remote, United States)
1517 Media Books

The Sales Manager, 1517 Media Books, is responsible for growing sales for 1517 Media’s three book imprints, Broadleaf Books, Beaming Books, and Fortress Press through retail, wholesale, and library channels. The sales manager will achieve aggressive sales goals by cultivating strong strategic relationships with account contacts, maintaining a deep knowledge of our products, target customers and markets, and collaborating with colleagues to strategically position and place titles for success.

The Sales Manager reports to the National Sales Director for 1517 Media Books and is a member of the dynamic and highly collaborative marketing and sales team responsible for driving the growth of our three book imprints, Fortress Press, Broadleaf Books, and Beaming Books.

The Sales Manager will:
• Grow sales through independent bookstores
o Drive growth and secure strong brand recognition among buyers at independent bookstores
o Manage independent rep groups, responding to questions, clearing obstacles, communicating strategy and expectations
 Set sales goals and conduct weekly check-in meetings
 Equip reps with the information, tools, and resources to effectively sell our titles to retailers and wholesalers
 Create and annotate Edelweiss catalogs for the rep teams
 Process sales rep commission reports
o Conduct outreach to top indies that are not covered by our rep group(s)
o Attend select regional shows, work with regionals on other promotional opportunities in partnership with marketing specialist
o Provide insights about sales through independent and regional channels for weekly Bookscan analysis
o Assist publicists in securing author events through independent retailers
• Drive Library channel expansion
o Serve as lead account manager for Baker and Taylor, Follet, BroDart, Yankee Book Peddler, and other library wholesalers
o Conduct sales presentations and with collections developers, strategically recommending order quantities
o Annotate Edelweiss catalogs
o Broker coop in partnership with marketing specialist
o Track sales through wholesalers and secures replenishment orders
o Conduct seasonal backlist pitches
o Sale analysis
• Maximize sales through Christian retailers and wholesalers, and assigned retail chains
o Serve as sales lead for accounts such as Books-a-Million, Barnes and Noble College Stores
o Sale relevant titles to Christian Book Distributor, Books-A-Million, Parable, Parasource, and other Christian retailers and wholesalers
o Create and annotate Edelweiss catalogs for key customers
o Pitch seasonal lists and secure frontlist and backlist sales
o Suggest and follow up on orders, and drive additional sales by positioning publicity updates
• Execute other sales-related responsibilities
o Maintain advanced product knowledge across the entire portfolio
o Maintain a high level of knowledge of both the existing market and potential new markets
o Work collaboratively across departments to leverage market and customer intelligence
o Assess inventory stock levels and contribute to decisions around print run and replenishment
o Assist with individual account queries, overstock sales, bulk orders
o Provide a weekly bestseller list analysis
o Conduct comp title research
o Manage titles in Edelweiss, ensuring display of sample pages for general public catalogs, updated reviews and endorsements, sales for related titles
o Prepare sales materials and presentations
o Submit SDQs to Amazon
o Manage Ingram chargebacks
• Complete other duties as assigned

Desired education and experience:
• B.A. in marketing, business, or closely related field
• 7-10 years of experience working in publishing sales
• Experience in book trade and/or consumer publishing or related media fields is critical

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Able to formulate thoughtful, persuasive, and succinct pitches tailored the needs of a myriad of customers
• Strong relationships with buyers at key accounts
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong presentation skills, experience pitching books
• Ability to manage simultaneous projects with demonstrated attention to detail
• Must be able to thrive in a highly collaborative environment
• Passion for books
• Demonstrated knowledge of the book publishing landscape
• Familiarity with religion and religious life
