Astra House is seeking to hire a Senior or Executive Editor with a proven acquisition record for high-quality literary fiction and non-fiction, and who has strong relationships with agents and authors, to join our small editorial team. The ideal candidate will have a global outlook, strong acquisitions record, excellent editorial skills, effective written and oral communication skills and a proven commitment to the values outlined in Astra House’s mission statement. They will be self-motivated and independent but also contribute positively as part of a small team where all ideas and innovations are highly valued and supported through implementation. Knowledge of a second or third language is a plus.

Responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

* Acquiring an excellent but focused list of titles per year, in the spirit of Astra House’s mission statement
* Maintaining, nurturing and developing strong relationships with authors, agents and foreign publishers; attracting new talent as well as commissioning book projects independently
* Highly skilled and detail-oriented editing and project management for all stages of book production, including collaborating with Production, Managing Editorial, Design, and other departments in creating unique, tailored positioning and packaging
* Thinking like a publisher for each book, including writing strategic marketing copy such as tip sheets, flap copy, etc. and working closely with Publicity, Marketing and Sales through publication and beyond.

What we’re looking for:

* A passionate editor with a deep knowledge of publishing and a track record of acquiring and creating books that earn critical acclaim, challenge the established narrative and broaden our understanding of the world
* A creative thinker with a strong vision for developing book projects that break new ground, are authentic and singular
* A college degree and eight or more years of experience acquiring and editing adult trade books across a wide range of genres and formats
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Ability to work both collaboratively and independently and to be supportive of other team members as well as authors
