Requirements:
The Senior Editor collaborates with all members of the department in the acquisition and development of fiction and nonfiction titles for children with a focus on picture book, early reader, chapter book, and graphic novel formats. The Senior Editor works closely with Design, Managing Editorial, Production, Sales and Marketing teams at every step in the publishing process.

Essential Functions:

• Acquire and edit 12 to 15 titles per year.
• Develop the range, quality, and diversity of Sterling’s front list original picture books, young reader formats, and graphic novels with a particular focus on #OwnVoices talent, debut authors/illustrators, and established industry leaders.
• Oversee acquired titles from start to finish, including agent and talent relations, contract negotiations, manuscript editing, project schedules, and creative direction.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Publicity and Sales teams to best position authors/illustrators and their books in the marketplace.
• Cultivate and maintain strong author and agent relationships.
• Insure successful and timely publication of all responsible titles.
• Represent Sterling Children’s Books at industry events and conferences.
• Present titles at sales conferences and account-specific presentations.

Qualifications:

• Proven ability to develop and maintain author and agent relationships.
• Proven experience working with book titles from original concept to bound book.
• Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel.
• Strong interpersonal and organization skills are essential.
• Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
• 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience required.
• Minimum 5 years of editorial experience in acquiring and developing picture books, early readers, chapter books, and graphic novels.
