The Editorial Director will share in our mission, working closely with and reporting to the Publishing Director, creating their own list of books for children up to the age of 16, while mentoring and overseeing the dedicated editorial team. Because Albert Whitman is a small, focused company, the Editorial Director will be involved in all aspects of the publishing process. We are a forward-thinking company with a newly-formed Media imprint, looking for an Editorial Director with commercial awareness, creativity, innovation, and imagination.

This position can be a hybrid work environment.

The Role:
• Heads the editorial department, supervising and mentoring editors, ensuring that responsibilities are met and helping to maintain Albert Whitman-style books
• Acquires own lists of picture books, early readers, chapter books, middle grade and young adult novels
• Responsible for content acquisition, author, agent, and project management, developmental editing, copyediting, ensuring that deadlines and budgets are met with the correct number of suitable titles are acquired for each publishing list
• Assists the Publishing Director as requested.

The Basics:
• Passion for highest quality children’s books, with experience in creating and publishing them
• Seven - ten years’ children’s publishing experience, including acquisition and proven management experience
• Confident with strong commercial awareness
• Familiarity with development of IP, as well as with brands, media and entertainment publishing a plus
• Basic knowledge of production and financial skills
• Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal relationships essential
• Knowledge of the retail, school and library markets
• Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
• Attention to detail, quality, process, and organization, ability to multi-task
