An exciting job opportunity has arisen in our New York office for a highly creative, experienced Children’s Book Editor. The successful candidate will work closely with the Children’s Book Commissioning Editor and the Publisher to create unique and inspiring titles for the children’s list and will be involved in all aspects of book creation, from pre-acquisitions through to publication. This will include concepting new titles, assessing texts, all stages of editing (structural edits through to final proofreading), and managing budgets and schedules. The editor will work internally with editorial, design, production, sales, marketing, and publicity colleagues, as well as externally with freelancers, foreign publishers, agents, authors, and illustrators.

The successful candidate will have a specific knowledge of and passion for children’s books, be full of creative ideas, demonstrable ability to develop age-appropriate content, as well as substantial project management and editing experience in children’s book publishing (including schedule and budget management, and InDesign skills). The editor will have a good grasp of the North American children’s book marketplace and trends, be attuned to market sensitivities, and know how to successfully position books within the market. They will also have expert writing and oral communication skills and be extremely collaborative.

Candidates will be selected for interview based on their experience and or demonstrable abilities to develop creative, age-appropriate content. Job Summary:

To manage all aspects of project editing, from the early stages of finding / concepting new projects to the final handover to production and beyond, working internally with editorial, design, production,
sales, marketing, and publicity colleagues, as well as externally with freelancers, foreign publishers, agents, authors, and illustrators.

Key Accountabilities:

- Work as a key member of the Children’s Publishing Team to build the Phaidon’s children’s book business.
- Evaluate potential projects (board books, novelty books, picture books, visual non-fiction books) with regards to relevancy to the audience, to the market, and to Phaidon’s list and identity
- Editorially manage each project from pre-acquisition through publication, and additionally support the marketing, publicity, and sales efforts
- Collaborate with the Design team and external designers throughout the editorial process regarding specs, illustration needs, routes, and overall design
- Work closely with the Managing Editor and Commissioning Editor to create and maintain each book’s pre-publication schedule
- Create project proposals, quote request forms, update company database records (Books), profit & loss statements, catalog copy, online copy, contract requests, payment requests, manage gratis lists and complete other administrative tasks relating to the children’s titles
- Present projects internally at various meetings including Sales Conference, and externally via the catalog and online selling copy
- Exhibit a willingness to consider others’ ideas and an eagerness to present your own

Requirements and skills:

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Minimum 5 years experience in children’s publishing, and a specific knowledge of and passion for children’s books (ages 0–14)
- A grasp of the North American children’s book marketplace and trends; knowledge of other countries’ markets a plus
- Expert writing skills, oral communication skills, negotiation skills, and presentation skills
- Comfort level with creating and evaluating profit and loss statements specific to book projects
- Proven success within a collaborative work environment
- Detail orientation, respect for process, deadline sensitivity, and the ability to juggle and prioritize
- Willingness to collaborate
- Candidate should be energetic, communicative, and resourceful
