Human Kinetics is seeking a talented Acquisitions Editor to join our Trade and Professional Division. This position will be responsible for acquiring and developing 16-20 titles a year in the areas of athletic training, strength and conditioning, fitness, and sport coaching.

The Acquisitions Editor works closely with the division director, authors, editorial and production staff, designers, and marketing to conceptualize, contract, deliver the authoritative resources, in a variety of formats, that Human Kinetics is known for. This position is available for remote work or onsite at our Champaign, IL headquarters.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conceptualize, acquire, and develop 16-20 books and ancillary products annually
- Cultivate and maintain a vast and respected network of subject matter experts within assigned subject areas.
- Monitor the performance, profitability, and accuracy of subject area resources; recommend revisions or replacement as needed.
- Prepare internal acquisitions proposals that contribute to the editorial mission of the division, analyzing project strengths, weaknesses, target market(s), and profitability.
- Identify, screen and recruit authors.
- Provide guidance and direction to authors in their preparation of acquisition materials.
- Negotiate agreements with authors, editors, contributors, literary agents, and others.
- Work with authors and editors to ensure the manuscript adheres to the contracted parameters and all content is in line with HK standards.
- Review and transmit the manuscript to Product Development. Work with internal staff to shape the project, and ensure budgets and schedules are met.
- Contribute to the packaging of products, including consultation with the division director on title, cover and interior design, and marketing copy and materials.
- Work with authors and internal staff to identify marketing, publicity, and sales opportunities for the division’s products.
- Travel to HK headquarters in Champaign, Illinois on a quarterly basis, and trade shows and conferences as needed Skills and qualifications:

Minimum Skills and qualifications:

- Undergraduate degree in one or more of the divisions subject areas and/or publishing-related discipline.
- 3+ years of proven success as an acquisitions editor for a trade or professional publisher
- Excellent analytical, writing, editing, communication, and project management skills
- Strong diplomacy skills, with experience negotiating, drafting, and reviewing contracts highly preferred.
- Attention to detail and excellent follow through on tasks
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs

Human Kinetics leads the world in providing information related to physical activity. That information takes many forms: textbooks and their ancillaries, consumer books, journals, online courses, video, digital products, and more.

The information touches the lives of millions of people worldwide who are interested in some form of physical activity. Those people include college students and professors, personal trainers, rehabilitation specialists, athletes, coaches, physical educators, nutritionists, parents, and sedentary people who want to become active.

In 1973, Rainer Martens, then a kinesiology professor at the University of Illinois, attended the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity conference. Recognizing the need to disseminate the conference proceedings but finding no interested publishers, he and his wife, Marilyn, created Human Kinetics in 1974. Three years later, Human Kinetics hired its first employee and published Physiology of Fitness (later titled Fitness & Health), still a leading professional fitness book and now in its seventh edition.

The leading publishers of the day saw a decline in physical education and began abandoning the field. Dr. Martens instead saw an opportunity and decided, with limited resources, to fill the niche.

Human Kinetics grew by reinvesting earnings and expanding into new areas such as coaching education. In 1984, HK began publishing educational resources for the YMCA, doubling the company’s sales. The following year, Dr. Martens left the university to work at HK full time. That same year, HK acquired Leisure Press, a sport and fitness trade publisher. As sales and opportunities grew through the years, Dr. Martens launched international offices, and the company continues to maintain an office in Canada in addition to the headquarters in Illinois.

By 1990, Human Kinetics had sales of $6 million and 80 employees. HK expanded beyond print to publish video, software, and online education products by reinvesting earnings in new technology. By the start of the new millennium, HK had grown to over $20 million in sales and approximately 250 employees. In 2005, Dr. Martens sold HK to his employees as part of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.

In 2020, Dr. Martens wrote a very special book chronicling the events and influences in his life. Written for his family and friends, as well as for professionals in the physical activity field and his colleagues at Human Kinetics, Rainer's Story shares his journey both personally and professionally. His book is available as a free download on the Human Kinetics website.

Today, with approximately 200 employees worldwide, Human Kinetics publishes more products—including books, journals, videos, and courses—than any other publisher serving physical activity disciplines.
