In the role of executive editor, the candidate will focus exclusively on hands-on creative work with authors, agents, and publishers, including building book projects from the ground up. Along with big titles with major publishers, you will also have an opportunity to help writers typically shut out by the gatekeepers of traditional publishing realize their authorship dreams.

We are looking for a talented and dedicated executive editor who possesses a wide range of knowledge and a depth of industry expertise across multiple genres, with the most relevant general category being prescriptive nonfiction—specifically business, leadership, personal development, and related genres.

Primary responsibilities will include assessing, editing, and developing book proposals, as well as providing critical review and analysis on full-length manuscripts. The executive editor will be working primarily with manuscripts and proposals that our firm will be writing for agents, publishers, and a variety of authors. The role includes reviewing, assessing, and developing book concepts; determining the book's positioning; identifying and analyzing comparative titles; outlining; consulting on pub launch and marketing strategy; reviewing and editing MS drafts; and identifying ideal publishing solutions for our clients.

This role also includes cultivating and nurturing potential and existing client relationships with agents, publishers, editors, and authors. Considerable sales commission bonuses will be granted for bringing in any business related to our firm’s services.

As a member of the management team, the executive editor will be a key contributor to the ongoing development of the company, including keeping the team informed about market trends and offering insight into potential growth opportunities, as well as offering advice and wisdom on how to improve our services and internal processes.

We work often with clients who are high-profile, high-net-worth, or innovators in their respective industries and professions. It is very important that the candidate feels comfortable working with such clients and is able to do so with the utmost professionalism and attention to detail.

The ideal candidate is disciplined enough to primarily work offsite but able to meet with authors, agents, and editors at our office or theirs if necessary (once it becomes safe to do so). Travel within the US may be required infrequently—approximately 2-4 times per year—for conferences or meetings with potential clients outside of the NY area.

An ideal candidate will have extensive experience in a variety of prescriptive nonfiction categories, though candidates with strong backgrounds in narrative nonfiction, memoir, or even adult fiction should still apply. We are seriously considering opening two positions: one for commercial fiction, and one for nonfiction.

* Develop, nurture, and maintain new and ongoing relationships with authors, agents, publishers, and other industry professionals
* Assess book proposals and provide critical review and analysis
* Review and manage the manuscript-development process and provide editorial guidance and review
* Determine which editors, publishers, and agents would be ideally suited for our clients’ book proposals and/or manuscripts
* Develop/oversee and/or edit mini (10-15 pages) and full-length (25-65 pages) book proposals
* Identify and acquire potential authors/clients
* Communicate effectively, efficiently, and in a timely manner with clients and coworkers
* Contribute to senior management initiatives to grow and improve our firm’s service offerings, growth strategy, and internal and external health
* Review, edit, and evaluate book concepts and full-length manuscripts; provide feedback and revisions to authors/writers/ghostwriters
* Participate in and lead publishing strategy and book-planning sessions with clients and writers
* Maintain up-to-date records of all projects in the appropriate systems
* Maintain extensive knowledge of current market trends, especially within core categories

* Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred)
* Must have 10+ years combined experience as an executive editor, literary agent, senior acquisitions editor, publisher, or other closely related position at a major publisher, and 15+ years professional experience in the book publishing industry
* Established relationships with agents, publishers, and industry professionals
* Strong understanding and awareness of the general marketplace and relevant market segments within the publishing industry
* Extensive industry knowledge of both publishing process and market trends
* Ideally located within the Greater NYC Area (<2-hour commute to the city and the ability to report to our office on-demand), though we will consider highly qualified clients from out of state

* Excellent conversation and presentation skills, with an ability to quickly establish rapport and react effectively in dynamic, fluid, customer-facing situations
* Self-motivated, hands-on, and creative with exceptional oral, written, presentation, and negotiation skills
* Ability to understand and quickly acquire in-depth knowledge of services offered, carefully analyze customer needs, and present solutions
* Persuasive and goal-oriented
* Highly creative and resourceful in recognizing and developing client opportunities
* Self-motivated and committed team player who enjoys a fast-paced and results-oriented work environment
* Ability to work both independently and with a team
* Ability to exhibit patience and enthusiasm in all client situations
* Proven ability to identify and cultivate new authors and identify bestseller potential
* Attention to details in a deadline-driven environment with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
* Strong initiative and judgment
* Strong computer and research skills, with proficiency in MS Word
